THANKSGIVING MESSAGE UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD November 28, 2019 Rev. Rosemary Cathcart President
Thanksgiving 2019 – how has this decade managed to disappear so quickly? It’s been gobbled up faster than the proverbial Thanksgiving Turkey!
Originally celebrated as a harvest festival, Thanksgiving first came into being with a proclamation made by President George Washington on October 3, 1789 after a request from Congress. Celebrated off and on since that time, it eventually morphed into a Federal holiday, observed on the fourth Thursday of each November in the United States of America.
The many traditions of Thanksgiving are as varied and diverse as those observing the celebration. In my Irish Catholic family from Western New York, it was all about the “bird”, the herb stuffing with walnuts and cranberries….. and the gravy, let’s not forget the gravy or those delicious desserts. Perhaps your family customs are more along the lines of steak, chicken or seafood. No matter what the menu, if we are fortunate enough to enjoy good health, stimulating life pursuits and the love of family and friends, we are rich and blessed beyond measure.
This Thursday, November 28, whether you’re having a hot pastrami on rye in New York City, or the more traditional turkey dinner in the middle of Iowa or Texas, take a moment to notice all of your many blessings and give sincere thanks for all that is right in your life. The pace today is so fast and electronically driven, that it’s easy to forget the richness of easy, in-person conversations. So make eye contact with someone you love, remembering to include in your prayers those less fortunate and our many troops stationed around the world. Their protection of our rights allow us to enjoy this American holiday year after year in relative peace.
Please know that you are held in the hearts and minds of Founders Rick and Jeni Prigmore, our Executive Director, Robin Morini, and every member of our Corporate Board. We honor you, as we shower you with love and genuine affection every moment. Your presence and participation in UB is what allows it to flourish on the world stage.
From that first toast to the last bite of pie, treasure the moments, enjoy the closeness of loved ones and sit in deep gratitude for all that is good in your life. May abundant blessings grace your life and the lives of all you hold dear.
A very happy Thanksgiving to you!
